SCANAVINO EMILIO

GENOVA 1922 - MILAN 1986

Emilio Scanavino was an Italian painter and sculptor, widely regarded as one of the leading figures of post-war abstract art in Italy. Born in 1922 in Genoa, Italy. In the early years of his career, his work was influenced by figurative traditions, but he soon moved toward abstraction, seeking a more personal and expressive visual language.

In the late 1940s, Scanavino traveled to Paris, where he encountered the European avant-garde and came into contact with artists such as Wols and Jean Dubuffet. These experiences played a key role in shaping his artistic direction, leading him toward Art Informel and a gestural, symbolic approach to painting.

Scanavino developed a distinctive style characterized by intricate networks of lines, knots, and tangled forms, often interpreted as metaphors for tension, confinement, and existential struggle. His works frequently combine dynamic compositions with a restrained color palette, emphasizing structure and rhythm.

Throughout his career, he exhibited extensively in Italy and internationally, participating several times in the Venice Biennale and other major exhibitions. His work received critical acclaim and contributed significantly to the development of abstract art in post-war Europe.

In addition to painting, Scanavino also produced ceramics and sculptures, further exploring his signature motifs in three-dimensional form.

Emilio Scanavino died in 1986 in Milan. Today, he is recognized as a major figure in 20th-century Italian art, and his works are included in important museum collections around the world.
