BERLINGERI CESARE
CITTANOVA 1948
Cesare Berlingeri is an Italian contemporary artist known for his distinctive “folded paintings,” in which the canvas itself becomes both surface and sculptural element. Born in 1948 in Cittanova, in the Calabria region of Italy.
In 1980s he began to develop the technique that would define his work: the folded canvas. Instead of treating the canvas as a flat support, he manipulated and folded it, creating compositions where color, light, and shadow interact with the physical structure of the surface.
His works are characterized by monochrome or subtly modulated colors, often applied to canvases that are bent, layered, or compressed into geometric or organic forms. This approach transforms painting into a three-dimensional object, blurring the boundary between painting and sculpture.
Throughout his career, Berlingeri has exhibited extensively in Italy and internationally, participating in major contemporary art exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale. His works are held in important public and private collections.
Cesare Berlingeri continues to live and work in Italy. He is recognized for his innovative contribution to contemporary art, particularly for redefining the traditional concept of painting through material and spatial experimentation.
