BUENO ANTONIO

BERLINO 1918 - FIESOLE 1984

Antonio Bueno was an Italian painter associated with figurative and surreal tendencies in 20th-century art, known for his refined technique and ironic, enigmatic imagery. Born in 1918 in Berlin, Germany, to a Spanish father and a Polish mother. He spent part of his youth in Spain before settling in Italy, where he would develop his artistic career, particularly in Florence.

He became one of the founders of the “Pittura Colta” (Cultivated Painting) movement, alongside his brother Xavier Bueno. This group emphasized technical skill, classical references, and a return to figurative painting at a time when abstraction was dominant.

His work is characterized by meticulous execution, smooth surfaces, and a subtle, often ironic reinterpretation of classical themes. Bueno frequently depicted figures, interiors, and objects with a sense of suspension and ambiguity, blending realism with a slightly surreal or metaphysical atmosphere.

Throughout his career, he exhibited widely in Italy and abroad, gaining recognition for his unique style and intellectual approach to painting. He was also active as a teacher, influencing younger generations of artists.

Antonio Bueno died in 1984 in Florence. Today, he is regarded as an important figure in 20th-century Italian figurative art, appreciated for his technical mastery and distinctive poetic vision.
